Please keep track of your child's reading minutes. They need to bring their planners back on Monday with their parents signature.
FOURTH GRADE REQUIRED READING AND HALL OF FAME
Dear Parents,
Our reading program in the fourth grade is designed to expose each student to good literature, increase reading skills, and develop a love of reading. Each month the student will receive a book report requirement, which will need to be completed for one book read from the genre category of the month. You will be notified of due dates and book report requirements monthly. The book report is usually due near the end of the month.
THE MONTHLY GENRE CATEGORIES ARE AS FOLLOWS:
September Realistic Fiction
October Mystery and Suspense
November Adventure/Historical Fiction
December Holiday Stories
January Fantasy/Science Fiction/fairy Tales/Fables
February Biography/Autobiography
March Humor
April Free Choice
Students can get ideas about what kind of books will be in each category from either their teacher or the school librarian. Students are required to read a minimum of one book from the monthly category.
Recording the minutes:
On the bottom portion in the daily column of your planner, the student will record the total number of minutes read for each day. At the end of the week, parents should help the student total minutes for that week and write the total minutes with a parent’s signature in the “Sat./Sun.” corner of the planner week. Planners will be checked for signatures each week by the teacher.
The required reading is a minimum of 20 minutes per night, at least five times per week, adding up to a minimum of 100 minutes per week.
The Hall of Fame is an additional ten minutes (minimum) to the required 20 minutes per night and also must be recorded with the daily/weekly totals. This means that the student would be reading 30 minutes per day, 5 times per week. Hall of fame minutes do not carry over month to month. If a student not only completes the required reading, but also completes the requirements for Hall of Fame, he/she will receive special recognition at the end-of-year fourth grade awards ceremony.
This home reading program is designed for all students. We hope you will encourage your student to reap the benefits of good reading by being a responsible reader. Even if your student reads regularly, he/she will not receive credit unless minutes are recorded each day in his/her planner, and a parent has signed where required.
If you have any questions or need clarification at any time, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s teacher.
Sincerely,
GROVECREST FOURTH GRADE TEACHERS
